New Seasons Mean Road Rule Reminders

Fall is finally here, which means lots of change in the family home. Flip flops are exchanged for boots and kids are back in school. Keeping in the spirit of getting heads back in the classroom, we at Union Colony Insurance have been taking note of our own space and what changes we need to make with the Colorado weather. 

We recently posted on our Facebook that as fall enters, we encourage our clients to attend West Greeley Conservation District’s “Soil Conservation Skills Session” on October 17th at Greeley’s Houston Gardens, to learn about the lifeblood of our existence – soil.

Another reminder with the new season is in our daily commute. With snow on the way, we realize it is time to take note of our “two-second rule” while on the road. With darker skies in the morning coupled by that cold rain we get, my morning commute turns into a bit of a drag. I almost seem to drive in a blur, like a robot. When the yellow light switches to red on Highway 34 and the giant dump truck in front of me screeches to a halt, life reminds me of how dangerous this daily drive is, particularly with slick roads!  

Thank goodness for my “two-second rule.” 

You probably have heard about this rule, but sometimes we forget on dreary overcast mornings commutes. The two-second rule functions to give us space on the road. As you drive behind another vehicle, take note of an object near the road like a sign, tree or mile marker. As you watch the vehicle in front of you pass that object, count two seconds, “one thousand one, one thousand two.” If I reach my object before I finish those two seconds that is a sign I am following too close! The Department of Motor Vehicles advises in bad weather, or when following large trucks, increase the count to four seconds.
