Hail, What Now?

Over the last month, we have experienced hail like we haven’t seen in several years. An article we did in July discussed how to prepare for hail (before it hits). Now let us talk about what you can do, post hailstorm.

Below are 5 tips to keep in mind while navigating through the repair stage.

(#1) Protect yourself from fraudulent roofing contractors

Be wary of door-to-door roofers. In several instances, homeowners have given out insurance information to non-reputable roofing contractors; who’ve proceeded to file a claim and cash in. This is fraud.

Buildings.com encourages homeowners to avoid contractors that knock on your door. Instead, research and reach out to companies with high review numbers. Any company can promise you the world; but customer satisfaction is the true measuring stick of a business.

(#2) Be sure to get multiple estimates

This tip is simple. After securing a list of reputable roofing companies, make sure to get estimates from each. Especially if they offer you a free evaluation.

(#3) Look at class 4 shingles.

Class 4 shingles are top of the line shingles that rate as the highest performing impact resistant shingles on the market. Additionally, having class 4 shingles can result in a reduction to your insurance premium. The money you spend on the upgrade is well worth it, especially in Colorado where every hailstorm has the potential to wreck your roof.

(#4) Contact your insurance company and file a claim.

Having your complete records available will help the process go smoothly.

(#5) Be aware of Senate Bill No. 35

This bill states that all roofing jobs be contracted in the state of Colorado. This bill is centered around Zoning; out of state roofers not understanding our building codes and therefore be subject to errors (some even under the shingles).

The bill is pretty complex so let me leave you with some key tips to remember.

  1. Want a warranty on your roof? Get it in writing! documentation is a necessity when it comes to replacing something as expensive as a roof.

  2. Lien Release from all contractors. Get this event documented as well.

  3. Call Weld or Larimer for a list of highly reputable roofers.
